In 1966 it was estimated that commercial seed supplies of the new high-protein strain would not be available for 5 or 6 years. But at least 3 seed companies have already announced that they expect to have enough seed to plant acres in the spring of 1969. The extent of further expansion of seed production will depend, of course, on farmer demand.Although the research history of high-lysine corn, in terms of years of research effort, approximately matches that of hybrid corn, it would appear that the complexity of the high-lysine problem was the greater of the two. A higher investment of funds and man-years, coupled with the availability of more sophisticated research equipment and the pressure of world food problems, undoubtedly hastened the day of success for high-lysine corn. One must recog nize also the intensive and wholehearted coopera tion of private industry.
