As the day were on, they noted joyfully that no act of aggression had followed upon the receipt of the Belgian note. But the military element cherished no illusions. After consulting the Minister of War by telephone, General Leman ordered the destruction of the railways and bridges, the use of which Germany had already demanded, and the demolition of numerous buildings in the neighbourhood of Lie'ge which would have obstructed the fire from the forts.
