Excerpt from Catalog of the Valuable Collection of United States Gold and Silver Coins of the Late Charles Gordon Zug, Esq., Of PittsburghIn his early boyhood, the late Charles Gordon Zug, began his collection of coins, and gave much attention to the interesting study of his country's coinage. He was born in Pittsburg, June 10th, 1872, and died at the age of 36 years, August 10, 1908, from heart failure caused by over-exertion through excessive bicycle riding while a lad. He was engaged in the iron manufacturing business with his father in Pittsburg.During the last years of his life he turned his atten tion particularly to the United States Gold Series, and though lacking a few of the higher rareties, he formed a splendid collection of the mint series of gold coins - the Eagles, including the rare 1798 and 1804, the Half Eag les, 1823, '25 and '30, and the Quarter Eagles, 1796, '97, 1821 and '26, Three Dollars - the rareties of 1865, '73 and '76, the last a brilliant proof, and his complete set of Dollars. He added largely to this series at my sale of the great collection of the late David S. Wilson, March, 1907, where Mr. Zug was one of the largest buyers, his purchases amounting to $3000, and I have preserved the record of the previous ownership of the pieces from this collection, by referring to this source in the present Catalogue. I can supply a few copies of the Wilson Sale Catalogue with price list at and with plates at the latter illustrating many additional coins of the Zug Sale. The Wilson Collection contained 600 pieces of U. S. Gold, and is the largest sale of the series ever held.He had not added much to the Silver Series during recent years, but it contains both varieties of the very rare 1796 Half Dollar in good condition.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
