Then, there may be occasions in which, for its own sake, he would desire to be able to write a short letter in Chinese. He may wish to consult a Chinese colleague at a distance on subjects concerning which it may not be well, at the time, that a third person should be a link to some thirty or forty more. Or he may find himself stranded up-country, with no pundit near at hand, under conditions which require the sending off of some written message. Or, he may wish personally to thank some Chinese gentleman, in his own handwriting, for a kindness received. For many reasons a China missionary's equipment will be the more complete if he include in it the faculty of Chinese letter-writing.
