Excerpt from College of the Immaculate Conception, New Orleans, 1885-86The College of the Immaculate Conception, conducted by the Fathers of the Society of Jesus, was founded in December, 1847, and was endowed by the Legislature of Louisiana, March, 1856, with all the rights and privileges of a University.The Course of Studies is two-fold: the Undergraduate or Classical and the Commercial, to which is added a Prepara tory Department for younger boys.The Classical Course, which leads to the degree of Batchelor of Arts, embraces the study of Mental and Moral Philosophy the English, Latin, Greek and French languages, Rhetoric, belles-lettres and Elocution', Arithmetic, Mathematics and the Natural Sciences, History, Geography and Mythology. To obtain the degree of Master of Arts, the student, after receiving the degree of A.
