Excerpt from Conversations of Goethe With Eckermann and Soret, Vol. 2 of 2 Goethe had invited me to take a drive this morning to the Hottelstedt Ecke, the most western summit of the Ettersburg, and thence to the Ettersburg hunting lodge. The day was very fine, and we drove early out of the Jacob's gate. Behind Lützendorf, where the journey was up-hill, and we could only drive leisurely, we had an opportunity for various observations. Goethe observed in the hedges a number of birds, and asked me if they were larks. Thou great and beloved one, thought I, though thou hast investigated nature as few others have, in ornithology thou appearest a mere child. "These are yellow-hammers and sparrows, " returned I, "and some late gras-mucken, which, after moulting, come from the thicket of the Ettersberg down to the gardens and fields, and prepare for their migration, but there are no larks. It is not in the nature of larks to settle upon bushes. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
