Culture Agencies of a Typical Manufacturing Group, South Chicago

Excerpt from Culture Agencies of a Typical Manufacturing Group, South Chicago: Being a Paper Presented to the Department of Sociology in the University of Chicago in the Spring Quarter of 1901, in Candidacy for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy Features of the paper of chief importance, in my estimation, are the following: First, under Economic Conditions sev eral things are important. The statement of classes of steel employés, with time and wages, nationality and naturalization, is the fullest and most detailed yet gathered. A considera tion almost as important is the study of the conditions of accidents in that industry, wherein new data are secured for estimating the rate of injuries occurring. The method of the importation of pauper labor, with the result of that immigration on labor conditions, is of importance to laboring men. Second, under Didactics, I believe the treatment of special features in relation to the needs of working populations, namely, the manual work, sewing and cooking schools, and kindergartens, is valuable because of the evidence adduced of appreciation of and response to these agencies on the part of the laborers them selves. Third, the table on the churches of South Chicago con tains detailed information of value to religious workers. The value of institutional methods in such populations is made apparent. Not the least important is the culture in¿uences shown to exist in labor unions and secret societies. The cook ing class as a counter-agent of the saloon is suggestive.
