Economic Impact of A Farming Innovation Organsiation

This monograph is based on the PhD research of Michael Gangemi and involves an economic impact analysis of the effects of a farming innovation organisation on a regional economy. The farming innovation organsiation is the Birchip Cropping Group, located in Buloke Shire in northwest Victoria, Australia. The analysis involves input-output modeling of the impacts of the Cropping Group on the Buloke Shire economy using alternative input-output models. The first of the models tested is a basic top-down approach, based on larger-area tables adjusted to suit the industrial structure of the Shire economy. The second model is a more sophisticated, research- intensive bottom-up model based on original survey data collected from entities operating in the Shire economy. The aim of the study, apart from measuring the impacts of the Cropping Group, is to determine whether the results obtained with the cheaper, less resource-intensive top-down model are robust when compared to those of the theoretically more reliable bottom-up apparoach.
