Florian Mayr had risen as usual at eight, had made coffee, and then as usual had played scales and finger exercises for an hour. The first lesson he had to give to - day was at ten. Accordingly he was about to make ready to go out but on this occasion he had certain new and peculiar measures to take. He folded a sheet of writing paper three times and cut it with a knife into eight pieces. On each of these eight slips he wrote with a pen in large vertical strokes a weighty and sig nificant word.
