Florian's Fables

Excerpt from Florian's Fables: Selected and Edited for the Use of Schools by Charles Yeld, M. A., With Philological and Explanatory Notes, Exercises, Dialogues, and a VocabularyTwenty years ago, to nine boys (and more than one master) out of every ten it would have been quite a revelation to have had pointed out to them that French is only Latin popularised and made simple in a con quered Province. But since the eminent labours of M. Brachet have been made accessible to English readers, there has been a great change for the better in the teaching of French, and no good teacher now would dream of ignoring the history of the language if his pupils possessed any knowledge at all of Latin. I am convinced that no boy or girl who has learned the Latin Accidence ought to be allowed to learn French without being taught something of its history, and of the steps by which the Latin words which he finds in his Caesar, or Phaedrus, or Livy have been brought to their present French form. Nor need there be any difficulty in teaching even young boys this much, as I hope to point out here.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
