Foreign Agriculture, Vol. 8

Excerpt from Foreign Agriculture, Vol. 8: A Review of Foreign Farm Policy, Production, and Trade, January, 1944 Ceylon had an estimated population of in 1938, or an average of 231 persons per square mile. It is therefore fairly thickly populated, ranking above British Malaya and Thailand, but is considerably less populated than Java and Japan and practically on the same level with India. As is the case with any of the above mentioned countries, the population is unevenly distributed. According to the 1931 census, the density of population ranged from a low of 24 in the North Central Prov ince to over per square mile in the Western Province, which, agriculturally, is one of the best developed. The population of Ceylon is mixed. Two-thirds comprise what are perhaps the original inhabitants of the island, the Sinhalese. The Ceylon Tamils and the Indian Tamils (recent arrivals) account for one-fourth of the population. Mbors Burghers2 and Eurasians:3 (32n000), Malays Europeans and others constitute the remainder. Data on occupational distribution of these groups in recent years are not available, the latest published refer to 1921. Clearly, though, the occupational pattern, or the economic conditions under which the various groups live, has not changed in the past two decades.
