Seated on the wall beside the gate
I think of the time when I shall recall
Precisely this moment, when pen in hand
I allow one drop of history to accumulate.
When someone takes the trouble to carve
Survival-space out of the wilderness
One cannot help wondering how long before
The stones are once again disassembled.
A tree's life is like a pleasant dream
And a wood like the legends of a people,
The earth expressing its desire for light
Prior to humanity, however in expectation -
Truly this heat tends to be burdensome
All over Tuscany and perhaps beyond
Where the juice in Umbrian grapes is sweetening
While melons ripen, anticipating our gratitude.
