The first three chapters are based upon papers read by the author before the Literary and Philosophical Society of Liverpool during the last twelve months, and these follow the order of the times at which they were severally read. Some parts of the sixth and seventh chapters were also read during the same period, and the Appendix is almost entirely based upon an address delivered to the above-named Society in 1883.
