I have also attempted to trace the laws to their original sources, and to follow them out to their original development, so to exhibit this, the finest portion of the Jewish ethical codes, as to inspire Jewish families with a just View of the duty of children towards their parents. The announcement of a new Work on Jewish law will probably be regarded as strange and unusual in the countries where Jewish study excites feeble in terest, and will, perhaps, evoke still greater surprise in those lands where the study of Hebrew literature has attained a noble and luxuriant development. Even in the latter countries, Where rational exposition is favourably received, a Halachic treatise would from the very first suffer from the prejudice that it cannot rest on a rational basis. This work will, I trust, remove and dissipate this prejudice, and will de monstrate the logical method and consistency of the Halachic branch of the Hebrew literature.
