Excerpt from Junior High School Mathematics, Vol. 3The technique of algebra is centered about the trans formation of equations. Frequently these equations are formulas, and the transformation has for its purpose the discovery of another relation among the general numbers involved. Often the equation is derived from a familiar formula, and this furnishes a purpose for its solution. It has been our purpose to develop as much skill in the tech nique of algebraic symbols, the fundamental processes, factoring, etc., as is 'needed to solve the problems that should be given in first-year algebra. To give these pro cesses meaning they are at once used to solve problems. For example, arithmetic progression is taught in connec tion with addition, geometric progression in connection with multiplication, factoring is connected with multipli cation and division. L Factoring is used also to put ex pressions into better form for computation. For instance, the pupil is taught to put the formula, S m +1rrl, into the more convenient form, S 1rr(r l).
