Excerpt from Life's Masquerade: A Novel
The door of the sitting-room was shut on the landing as Freddy passed, though through it he heard the strained voice of Mrs. Jerkins singing to herself. It was quite dark, and his heart began to thump away in his breast, with fear at the obscurity which his imagination peopled with many vague horrors. He bravely, however, made up his mind to go on, but remembering that two more black flights had to be passed before the very worst of all could be reached - the little dark hole where he was to sleep - his heart sunk within him, and he paused, uncertain how to act. Barbarous as was Mrs. Jerkins's voice, it sounded almost sweet amidst the darkness.
