His Royal Highness the Duke of York, constantly alive to what ever could benefit the King's Service, was ''subsequently induced to send two officers to the Netherlands to become acquainted with that system in its details. From the papers of these gentlemen, and from the instructions they received from Colonel Van Gorkum, I have extracted and culled with care as much of the System as appears to me to be applicable to His Majesty's Service, and by the adoption of which we shall be enabled to show, in our military plans, with accuracy and expedi tion, the height of all hills, and the nature of all slopes.
