Excerpt from Memoirs of the Geological Survey of the United Kingdom, Vol. 1: The Jurassic Rocks of Britain, YorkshireWhen viewed from this low ground the elevated region on the east is seen to rise at first gradually in a series of low undulating hills, never more than a mile or two in breadth, behind which the more massive beds of the series run up abruptly in a series of escarpments and precipices to an altitude in many cases of over feet above the plain. Although there is no evidence that this inland escarpment has ever been a sea-clifi', the resemblance of these bold promontories and outlying hills, with their deep bay like recesses, to an old line of coast is very striking.
