Excerpt from Modern Language Teaching, Vol. 5: The Official Organ of the Modern Language Association From every point of view the meeting at Oxford was a great success, and we may feel confident that it marks another step forward in the progress of the Modern Language Association. Nothing could have been more impressive than the beautiful surroundings in which the opening conversazione on Monday, January 11, was held. The magnificent hall of Christ Church, with its remarkable series of portraits, adorned with palms and ferns, with a vivacious assembly of members and friends, presented a scene not easily forgotten. No attempt was made to add music or song to the enjoyment of the company, and wisely, for when friends come together from many parts they value every moment in which they may exchange greetings and confidences. The actual work of the meeting began on Tuesday morning in the Examination Schools. The committee met at a quarter to ten, when our strenuous Secretary was able to announce that no less than thirty-five applications for membership had been received, bringing our numbers to about 720, never before has 700 been reached. At half-past ten our President, Lord Fitzmaurice, took the chair, and the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Oxford welcomed the Association in a graceful speech, to be found in another column. Then followed the General Committee's report on the work of the year, supplemented by the Master of Gonville and Caius College, who, as Chairman of the Committee on Training, gave a lucid resume of the report which that Committee has prepared.
