On Melancholy

Angebote / Angebote:

In his medical monograph On Melancholy, Rufus of Ephesus (fl. AD 100) combined medical and philosophical ideas: black bile is the cause for madness and depression, and a sign of intellectual genius. His notion of melancholy strongly influenced subsequent generations of physicians, and especially Galen, and dominated both the Middle Ages and the Renaissance. In the present volume the Greek, Latin and Arabic fragments of this work, lost in the original, have been collected, translated into English, and commented upon for the first time. In interpretative essays, leading scholars investigate the afterlife of this treatise in antiquity, the Middle Ages, the Renaissance, and the early modern period from the vantage points of history, philosophy, literature, art history, and psychiatry. With contributions by: Philip van der Eijk, Vivian Nutton, Peter E. Pormann, Thomas Rütten, Peter-Klaus Schuster, Simon Swain, Peter Toohey, Jörg Völlnagel
