Pilgrimage gave Sarah Bartley a channel in which she could revisit influential locations from her past. She was not on an assignment. She chose each place with the intention to find beauty in both the negative and positive effects of them. The first place was her childhood home, which she visited with a mini Polaroid camera. Afterwards, she made a list of more locations and set out on a six-month journey, visiting a new location every other week. In between she spent time editing the photos, writing, and processing. The project remained personal while becoming more sophisticated with the equipment she chose to utilize and how she began to express the journey in book form. Each location is a part of a larger narrative of restoration and closure. They are paired with poetry and journal entries that relate to each location. It's a book that, woven between the lines of each story, tells a larger story of healing and belonging. Bartley says, "she is not in those places anymore" and taking photos of locations, void of people and interaction, in and of itself is conceptually far removed and the way she chose to portray the fact that these things no longer have a controlling influence on how she lives my life. They have nonetheless shaped her. Though a personal story, Bartley aims to start a conversation with readers of what it means to heal, belong to, and share your history.
