Excerpt from Reports of the Progress of Applied Chemistry, 1922, Vol. 7 In the Merrill system of indirect heating a suitable petroleum Oil is used as the medium the system consists of a furnace provided with a coil in which the oil is heated, a pump by which the oil is circulated, and a coil of pipe arranged in a suitable manner in the vessel that contains the material to be heated. These three parts are connected together by a piping system in which is included an expansion vessel, open to the atmosphere, so that no great increase of pressure can occur. The furnace may, if desired, be placed in another building so as to be completely isolated from the vessel which contains the material to be heated, thus avoiding all risks of fire. Any difference of temperature that is desired may be maintained between the circulating oil and the material being heated so that the rate of heating is under perfect control. Any temperature up to about 315° C. Can be obtained with the oils now in use, and the system is particularly suited for such operations as gum running, varnish making, and distilling in¿ammable liquids.
