That fate has been mine. I venture to put together, in this volume, the writings I have been occupied with in silence and retirement, they are purely diplomatic essays, and have appeared in the Revue des Deux Mondes. It seems to me, however, fit and opportune that they should be preceded by a few rapid remarks which cannot be without interest to the reader, whilst they will have particular value for the author of these pages.
