If at the heart of the great conflict one finds a passion for power that took little or no account of moral considerations, it might be urged that the world's safety lies in exalting, with a renewed and serious enthusiasm, the moral values. But can there be any such enthusiasm without a deepening and quickening of the religious interest? May we not, in the last resort, trace the present calamities to a decline in faith?
