In 413 the West Goths, retiring from Italy, advanced to the Pyrenees, and established in N orth east Spain a kingdom with Barcelona as the capital in Southern Gaul a second kingdom round Toulouse. From these centres they slowly extended their do minion over almost the whole of the peninsula. In consequence of their pressure, the Vandals in 429 abandoned Spain and invaded Africa. Under the leadership of Gaiseric their conquest was rapid, the loss of Carthage in 439 marked the beginning of the end of Roman dominion.
