The Ideal Humanity

Excerpt from The Ideal Humanity: And Other Parish Sermons In the year 1859 there graduated from the General Theological Seminary a young man whose singularly engaging presence made, upon those who encountered him on his entrance into Holy Orders, a very unusual impression. There was the aspect of extreme youth - a freshness and purity of expression almost womanly - but, combined with these, the intimations of a mind of singular vigor and insight, and of rare and beautiful courage and directness in the search for truth. Those earlier prophecies were not disappointed. After spending his diaconate in New York, Mr. Wilson was called to the rectorship of St. Peter's Church, Albany, then, as now, the foremost parish in what is now the Diocese of Albany, and then, as now, one of the most important and conspicuous cures in our American Church. If there were any who doubted as to the capability of the young stripling to assume responsibilities so grave, their doubts were soon dispelled. Mr. Wilson was fortunate in having the help, as his associate, of the Rev. William Tatlock, who had been his classmate, and it would not have been easy to find two men who more admirably supplemented each other. The writer, then beginning his ministry in a neighboring town, was privileged to enjoy the friendship and to be stimulated by the example of these two men, one of whom survives, and of whom, therefore, he may not speak as he would. But the other - who that ever knew him will forget the rare spell of his original and acute mind, and the still rarer charm of his transparent and really heroic nature?
