The Journal of Common Market Studies (JCMS) Annual Review covers the major events concerning the European Union (EU) in the past year. In addition to articles written by leading experts in their respective fields - covering a wide array of political, economic, legal and social issues - this Annual Review hosts an Annual Lecture by a renowned practitioner of EU politics: former High Representative of Foreign Affairs & Security Policy and former Vice-President of the Commission Federica Mogherini. The Annual Lecture offers an optimistic view on how the EU has recovered credibility by breaking some of its taboos, thus turning the Covid-19 crisis into an opportunity to relaunch itself. This year, a set of articles analyse various aspects of the Covid-19 crisis and of the EU responses to it: institutional, political economic and medical. The Annual Review includes a longer-term analysis and reflection on emergency politics in the EU, as well as a piece on how the Black Lives Matter movement developed in Europe. Other contributions focus on the impact of the public health crisis on new policies, such as the recently launched European Green Deal. The Annual Review also hosts articles on the Brexit negotiations and the effects of Brexit (and other crises) on social cohesion. The external dimension of the EU is covered by contributions analyzing the Belarusian crisis, the Armenia-Azerbaijan conflict, and the EU's relationships with the US and with China. The Annual Review aims to enhance its reputation as an authoritative and up to date source of theoretically informed and empirically based analysis for practitioners, scholars and students of the EU and its relationships with other regional and/or global actors.
