The judicious Christian, aware that all truth proceeds from One Eternal source, will venerate it, according to its importance, wherever it is found. Whether it has come down by tradition, or by writing, he knows that it must, at some time or other, have been revealed. And upon the supposition that those good moral principles which are found among unenlightened nations, were planted in man by nature, (which it would be difficult to prove or to deny, in toto), yet he will cheerfully allow them to have that degree of importance, which they deserve, well knowing that they answer some important end in the great system Of the Creator's Government. Among a people whose sentiments, laws, and national usages, bear such evident traces Of high antiquity, as to leave no room to doubt of their patriarchal origin, it is naturally to be expected that many excellent moral maxims should be found, expressed with an air and a simplicity peculiar to the earlier ages of the world.
