Excerpt from The Santa Cruz Irrigation DistrictThe majority of the landholders in the Santa Cruz Valley'have been and continue to be enacomnercial farmers. Only someften to fifteen per cent of the landholdings are exten sive enough for commercial agriculture, and the greater portion of these are concentrated at the lower end of the valley, close to the juncture of the Santa Cruz and the Rio Grande Rivers. The development of commercial agriculture at the lower end of the valley is comparatively recent, it followed the coming of the Denver Rio Grande Railroad in 1880, and the subsequent development of Espanola as a trading center.
