Excerpt from The You-Ought-to-Buy-Ography of an Ink-Slinger
One does need to know much to publish a book like this. All I know is that The Midget owed me$100, needed to make its bank book balance, and I got tired of waiting for the elusive dollars to come back to me and decided to to take it out in printing. That's what it cost me.
The writing I did "just for the fun of it, " when I felt kind of bubbling like. It didn't cost me anything. It won't cost you anything to read it. If you feel unwilling to make the start, I offer you a reward of $1.00.
If at the close you feel that you owe me any part of the $100.00 the publishing cost me, you may send it to The Boys' Manual Training School. That's why I have called this book a "You-ought-to-buy-ography."
I could make this preface much longer by using some of the words I have left out of this book to shorten it, but I want space on this page for a key to the jokes that have got in it, in spite of my vigilance. I understand them, but I'm afraid you might trip over them.
