We saw in our last Chapter that this counsel opens itself out in the inspired precept of the Book of Proverbs, "Keep thy heart above all keeping, " and its context, - that context teaching that each of the avenues is to be kept, by which the heart communicates with the outer world, the sally-port of the tongue ("Put away from thee a froward mouth"), the gate of the senses ("Let thine eyes look right on"), and the sally-port of moral action ("Ponder the path of thy feet, and let all thy ways be established").
