Excerpt from Two Hundred and Fiftieth Anniversary of the Settlement of Providence, June 23 and 24, 1886June, 1886, be selected. The committee make this suggestion in view of the fact that the twenty-fourth of June will be observed as a festi val day by the French residents and the Masonic fraternity. Rhode Island owes a debt of gratitude to France for its aid in our hours of trial, and if the ancient and honorable societies composing the Masonic order, with the F rench societies, could be induced to make their festi val a part of the city's anniversary celebration, it would greatly enhance the character of the observance. The committee are of the opinion that this matter of a general celebration recommends itself to all who take an active and a lively interest in the past, present and future of our city. Apart and outside of the present interests that would naturally attach to all such cere monies, those who are thoughtful of the generations to follow them should realize that there is nothing more instructive than a knowledge of just such events as this celebration will commemorate. It is also desirable that the celebration should be made comprehensive, and in a good degree present in its leading features an accurate compendium or complete history of that which has been achieved since the foundation of the city, and give it more than a mere personal interest as connected with our institutions, business industries and the families which have been and are now actively identified with the welfare of Providence And in that connection, in a commonwealth whose family relations are so closely connected as are those of Rhode Islanders, many Providence families may claim some close identity with the principal events of the city during the entire period of its history.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
